Alex Sink & David Pleat discuss oil drilling legislation

DESTIN — Alex Sink, Florida’s chief financial officer and the leading Democratic candidate for governor, said she’s following “very closely” state legislation that would allow oil drilling near the coast.

Sink, who spoke at a closed-door fundraiser at Harbor Docks restaurant August 23rd, wouldn’t take a stand on the proposal, which was introduced late in last year’s legislative session.

However, she did boast of being “one of the loudest voices” against state Rep. Dean Cannon’s effort to slip a bill to allow drilling in state waters through “literally at the last minute.”   “That was horribly bad timing,” she said.

Sink, who spoke to a reporter after the meeting, apparently was briefed on Cannon’s legislation by David Pleat, a Destin lawyer and 2010 Democratic candidate for Marti Coley’s District 7 state House seat.

Pleat is adamantly opposed to Cannon’s proposal, which would allow drilling within five miles of the coast.

He said he will make defeating Cannon’s bill — which could come before the legislature again before either he or Sink stand for election — a centerpiece of his campaign.  Read more from the Northwest Florida Daily News

Women's Demo Club to hear county planners

As part of their community outreach, the Walton County Planning Department will present a program for the Walton County Democratic Women's Club September 30th meeting.  "We hope anyone in the community who is concerned about the future
development of our county will attend this event," says Mary Wolfe, President of the WCDWC.

Nothing gets a crowd quicker than a notice that a zoning change is about to occur in an existing neighborhood.  But, how many people really understand how the Walton County Planning and Development Department makes recommendations?

If you don't know, you have a chance to learn and to ask questions from the people who work in this area every day.  You may be surprised at the sophisticated information that planners -- and you the public-- have for making good future growth decisions.

This informative and important presentation will take place at the South Walton Courthouse Annex Boardroom, 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 30th.  Read more►

It's county fair time!

The Walton County Fair will open in  Defuniak Springs Oct. 19th - Oct. 24th. Booth decoration and set up will begin Oct. 17th - 18th. As we have in the past, the Walton

County Democratic Party would like to have a presence at the Fair.  To participate the WCDP needs 14-16  volunteers to staff the booth during Fair hours,  Monday-Friday,  5 PM til 9 PM,  and Saturday 10 AM til 9:30 PM, as well as volunteers to decorate the booth with WCDP items.

The perk for volunteers is that they will be provided with two free tickets for each week night and four for Saturday. Booth renters are required to provide a 6- foot folding rectangular table and at least two chairs.

To participate the Walton County Democratic Party must be certain that the booth is staffed, as required by the Fair Association, for all of the hours the Fair is open. Unless volunteers come forward, the DEC cannot participate in this community event.

Please call or email Frank Day, the Fair Committee Coordinator, if you are interested in decorating or staffing the booth so that he may schedule your participation.
