You Don't Want to Miss this Meeting!

"For reasons both political and legal, the information that follows about our next meeting will NOT satisfy those of you who are curious about what’s coming."   -- Jeremy Solomon, DEC Chair

I hope it suffices to say that our next DEC meeting on August 27th at the Coastal Branch Library will demonstrate what we meant when we reorganized and declared that "we intend to make the Democratic Party visible and viable, politically and economically significant."

We have news that will demonstrate that we have taken an impressive first step in that stated direction. We have invited party officials and guests from around the Panhandle and Tallahassee to attend this meeting.
It is important to our credibility that you attend and bring with you any friends who are seriously concerned with the politics of our county and our districts. I believe that you will not be disappointed.
I'm looking forward to an event that will both renew us and inspire us to return to the fight, and these days it is a fight -- for integrity and rationality in our government.  See agenda

A message from Demo State Chair Karen Thurman
“Floridians are struggling with the skyrocketing cost of health insurance. Way too often I hear stories of ineligibility, inadequate coverage, and even medical bills driving them to bankruptcy. Those stories motivate me to work towards reform. . . .  Photo: Karen Thurman and Carrie Meek
“But, with some spreading rumors of death panels and using scare tactics such as falsely alleging Florida's seniors would lose their Medicare, we've been unable to have a healthy discussion on the issue. At a town hall in Tampa, a man was literally attacked. Folks were screaming and shouting -- the result was that no one, on any side of the debate, was able to truly make their voice heard and participate in a dialogue.
That's why President Obama and I need your help. If Congress is going to pass health insurance reform, then we'll need your help to put a stop to such misinformation.   Please visit the White House's website to get the all facts on health reform.

Democratic Women's Club plans Fall meetings
The Walton County Democratic Women's Club met in late July to plan upcoming club events.  In the works is a field trip to the Nokuse Plantation with lunch at the Red Bay Cafe (think road trip!) and a presentation by the Walton County Planning Department at their South Walton offices to learn what land use information is now available and how the staff is working to create long-term plans for the county.
You still have time to sign up for the Florida Demo Women's Annual Convention.  Email Mary Wolfe at maryinbham@aol.com if you are interested in attending.

Watch Board of County Commissioners meetings
Thanks to DEC volunteers Ray Padgett and his assistant Tom Brooks, you can view the bi-monthly Board of County Commissioners meetings on our website.  Missing only ONE meeting since beginning this service to the community more than a year ago, Ray and Tom get little recognition and perform without fanfare behind the scenes.
You can view an entire meeting or just specific items on the agenda which are of interest to you.  Check it out  It's just one more way to shed light on our government and for you to see firsthand how decisions are made and who makes them.    Again, a big thanks to Ray and Tom!

FairDistrictsFlorida.org
WE HAVE HUGE NEWS:We have collected over 1.5 million petitions! That represents the vast majority of what we need to get on the ballot – and it’s even more exciting because we're way ahead of schedule!
NOW THE CHALLENGE:The State of Florida charges a $.10 processing fee per petition. That’s a lot of money we need to raise.
WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT: On 9/9/09, we will host Donate for FairDistricts Day, the biggest online fundraiser in Florida history. We need you to take responsibility and make this statewide event a success by becoming a Co-Host, pledging to give, and spreading the word.
