Community Walton was formed as a call to community service by President Obama.  It is a totally bi-partisan group devoted to “being the change” in Walton County.

After a series of meetings, the two major goals of the team of volunteers are these:

1.) To promote a public utilities “Check The Box” Program.  We are asking each utility company in Walton County to put a check box on their bills allowing their customers to donate $1.00/$5.00/$10.00/Other each time they pay a bill.  This would fund a pool to help desperate families pay their utility bills.

2.)  To facilitate the implementation of a 211 system in our area.  The 211 system is a number that one can call for  critical, but non-emergency, needs.  They would reach a human 24/7 who could direct them to the source of relief or help that they need.   Click on www.211.org  for more information or www.louisiana211.org to sample a statewide implementation program.

Recognizing that this is a long term, very large undertaking, Community Walton has put together a steering committee currently working to detail the steps required to successfully bring 211 to the panhandle.

An ancillary effort of Community Walton is to bring a “sense of community” back to Walton County.  We recognize that as our lives have become more complex; the old time sense of community has been lost in much of America.  We seek to reunite folks and businesses from all parts of this wonderful county.  With the construction of the new section of  Hwy 331, it takes just 20-25 minutes to drive from Blue Mountain Beach to the Walmart in DeFuniak Springs.  It would take just about that long or longer during high season to drive to the Destin Walmart.  We need to communicate this so that we can keep the dollars right here in Walton whenever possible.  And the folks are just plain nice here!

We also include a sharing effort at every Community Walton meeting.  We all bring something for Caring and Sharing along with a covered dish.  We encourage everyone to come and be a part of our “Community.”  We normally meet on the last Tuesday of the month at the Freeport Community Center (only minutes from 30A and minutes or so from DeFuniak Springs).

If you would like to volunteer with any of the projects or just want to have dinner with us, please contact Jane Burns  685-8505 or email cwfla@me.com
