Treasurer's report for the August 27th DEC Meeting |
From the Chair - "This is our mission"
I came into this job through the Obama campaign, which many of us did. And in so many ways that experience was instructive. Obama's message was clear -- “Change we can believe in.” That message said two things: one, we need change and two, we can't believe the other side – who seemed to acknowledge that change was needed, but offered nothing of substance that represented any change.
Now, in most parts of the country, the message was heard, and the election was won decisively-- except in certain areas of the country, Walton County being one of those areas.
Therein lies the problem we face as Democrats in an overwhelmingly non-Democratic area of the country. I say non-Democratic because as I look from the outside in, I see that people who call themselves Republicans are as diverse a group in this county as any Democratic group ever was.
Some of this county seems to operate as a family-owned business. Nominal Republicans have their brothers, sisters and cousins take their offices on a rotating basis. Other Republicans seem to look at state and local government as merely extensions of their personal business interests-- sometimes operating so openly and notoriously (as Speaker Sansom did) that you have to wonder where such a naïve sense of entitlement could come from. These groups label themselves Republicans merely as a flag of convenience because traditional Republican values of smaller government and fiscal responsibility do not apply where their wallets are involved. Yet, the vast majority of the public servants in this county are responsible, responsive, intelligent, open, concerned and professional in their approach to governance.
These are the people that we need to talk to, talk with, and listen to. There is only one way to learn the concerns and problems of the county and that is to listen. In this Walton County Democratic Party, we will listen. When the occasion calls for it, we will speak. And when we speak, we will be heard.
But they will listen only if we are honest with ourselves and with those whom we seek to influence. So, we will concentrate on our character and adhere to our own principles.
At that point, our telephone calls will be returned, and our votes will count. We will not be discounted or ignored. We will not be distrusted or misinterpreted. At that point, we will have a bipartisan county where all of those who govern are expected to be concerned, not merely with one party or one patron's interests, but with those of the whole community that is Walton County. - - Jeremy Solomon, Chair, Walton County DEC
